It starts in universities, where future teachers develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence they will need throughout their careers. When teacher education programmes are up to date and connected to the realities of schools, new teachers are better prepared to support every learner.

This is one of the goals of TECSES. By working closely with universities across Nepal, TECSES supports the development of stronger pre-service teacher education programmes that prepare future teachers for today's classrooms.

Over the past years, I have had the opportunity to work closely with Far-Western University and Madhesh University. Although these universities are very different, both share a strong commitment to improving teacher education.

Far Western University has an established Faculty of Education that prepares thousands of future teachers through its campuses and affiliated colleges. Together with TECSES, the university is revising its Bachelor of Education curriculum. The aim is to move towards a competence-based curriculum that places greater emphasis on practical teaching skills, subject knowledge, and the competencies that competent teachers need in the 21st century.

Curriculum reform is not simply about changing course titles or adding new subjects. It is about ensuring that future teachers graduate with the knowledge and practical skills they need to help children learn. To support this work, TECSES has brought together national and international experts to work alongside the university staff through workshops, consultations, and ongoing technical support.

Madhesh University presents a different but equally exciting opportunity. As a relatively new university, it has greater flexibility to introduce new academic programmes and innovative approaches. This has created a strong foundation for collaboration.

One important milestone has already been achieved. Together with the university, TECSES completed a needs assessment to identify what kind of teacher education programme would best serve the province. Based on this work, the Curriculum Development Committee of Madhesh University and TECSES experts prepared the first draft of a one-year Post Graduate Diploma in Teacher Education. The work continues with the goal of finalising the curriculum by September 2026.

Through consultations, workshops and discussions with education professionals across Sudurpashchim and Madhesh provinces, I have seen that there is often a gap between what future teachers learn at university and what schools expect them to know. Teacher education curricula are not always closely connected to the school curriculum for Grades 1 to 12, making it more difficult for newly qualified teachers to apply effective teaching methods in real classrooms.

Addressing this gap requires cooperation between universities, schools, and education authorities. It also requires continuous learning and the willingness to rethink how teachers are prepared.

Along the way, I have had many inspiring conversations with education leaders. One discussion with the Vice-Chancellor of Madhesh University centred on a simple but powerful idea: "Teacher First – Teach First." It reflects the belief that investing in teachers is one of the most effective ways to improve education.

Another memorable conversation was with the former Chief Minister of Sudurpashchim Province, who said: "Competent and strong teaching forces can make strong schools for quality learning for all students."

These messages capture the heart of TECSES's work. Improving education begins with strengthening teachers, and strengthening teachers begins with high-quality teacher education.

The work is still ongoing, but the progress made through partnerships with Far-Western University and Madhesh University shows what can be achieved when universities, experts and education authorities work together towards a shared vision. Step by step, these efforts are helping build a more coherent and future-oriented teacher education system that will benefit generations of teachers and learners across Nepal.

<img decoding="async" width="819" height="1024" data-src="https://www.tecses.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Prem-819x1024.png" alt="Quote with Prem: Preparing good teachers begins long before they enter a classroom.
